Hi Keith, Just thought I'd send you a little note to say that i thought your fear of flying CD's are absolutely brilliant - Thank you for sending them to me before I went to San Fransisco. I listened to them day and night up to the flight and listened to them as we were taking off and any time I got apprehensive. I probably can recite a lot of them off by heart I've listened to them so much. Suffice to say I still don't enjoy flying (that would take a miracle!) but they did help immensely in that I knew what was happening and was better prepared to deal with turbulance and general noises that previously would simply have paniced me. I wouldn't say it was a completely 'fear-free' experience but overall the worst part of the flight was simply the uncomfortableness and I never thought I'd say that! Anyway i made it there and back in one piece and had a really good honeymoon! Big thanks, A Back

  Hi Keith,

Just purchased your book which is excellent. It has answered so many questions for me that have been in my head every time I’ve been on an aeroplane, I’m not a complete nervous wreck when I get on a plane but very apprehensive. I fly about 5 times a year and when asked if I have a fear of flying I always say no but I do have a fear of crashing!! Your book is really helpful and especially the coverage of turbulence which I hate, I have been through some pretty bad turbulence in recent flights and now sit there waiting for it to start.

My question is how does bad turbulence effect the structure of the plane does it add to metal fatigue and is it possible that parts could break off due to continually flying through it.

Thanks again for your book. Regards T

Answer:
T… this is the answer.
Bad turbulence will not add to metal fatigue, because aircraft parts are tested by ultrasonic or whatever testing devices to measure the presence of fatigue. IF discovered prevention and rectification methods are implemented.

I am not a metallurgist but I seem to remember from my schoolboy physics that it's only when you bend something too much that it suffers fatigue but even then that doesn't mean it'll break .
the Eiffel tower has been bending in the wind for a hundred years to ease the strains on the metal... so the fact that the wings bend doesn't mean they are being more stressed. In fact it is relieving the stress.

Wings are designed to be able to withstand forces far greater than they are likely to suffer in flight so they don't get stressed at the levels of turbulence that we experience.
So NO IT DOESN'T ADD TO METAL FATIGUE
and NO BITS WILL NOT FALL OFF
Hope this helps
Regards Keith

  Dear Keith,

Unfortunately I will not be able to make the course on Saturday xxx. I am now having to work this weekend to be able to take time off for the trip to New York.I am feeling a lot calmer about flying and through positive thoughts and reading your book I know I am going to be able to do this.

My friends E and also K ordered a book from you and both have had great experiences flying because of it. My mother in law read mine and she was petrified but also had great flying experience over Xmas. Well done, the book is excellent Unfortunately for you though it is too good as now do not need to go on the course!

  Morning Keith,

Yes I did and it was /is fantastic. I met a very nervous flyer in Tobago and passed the name of the book onto her with a few tips. Thank you so very much - it helped me no end - I can honestly say it was the easiest flight I have taken.

  Keith,

YES!!! without a doubt your book helped me with my problem. The only unfortunate part for you is that your book helped enough for me to want to take the step further and actually board a plane and take a flight, which I did via the 'flying without fear' course as this included a 45 min flight in an aeroplane. This of course meant not taking part in your course which doesn't include the flight!

With the knowledge I gained from your book and the confidence it gave me enabled me to step onto that aeroplane and actually fly for the first time in 20 years. I was amazed how confident and comfortable I felt during the flight.

I would also add that this came from the light hearted and relaxed way the book was written which, to me, set the scene for how a flight should be.I'm now keen to take a 'proper' flight which I'll hopefully do in the near future.

So, THANK YOU for your book and allowing me the opportunity to take one more step forward in facing my demons.

Regards

....I am 100% better when flying, I especially get comfort from knowing what the different noises are now during take off and mentally tick each one off as I hear it. I am still a little aprehensive for for about 10-15 minutes into journey but try and separate what I know is fact from what I am imagining in my head.

  Hello Keith,

It's a nice touch to receive a follow up contact.
I found the book very interesting and helpful. It certainly answered a great many of the questions I hadn't had answered anywhere else and it certainly educated me on what is involved in getting the "Ginormous Thing " airborne and down again. I like the style of presentation, it is written in a light hearted way yet it gets a very informative message across.

I wish I had read it before I paid for extensive Hypnotic Therapy!

Nice one.

  Hello Keith,

Thank you, our honeymoon was fantastic..........12 hour flight to XXXX , but it was ok.......my husband was actually much more nervous than I was! He may be needing to go on a course, in which case I will probably attend with him .

You may remember me, in that I ordered your book a few weeks ago and it was temporarily lost in the post, but then turned up.

I've read the book, and although I've not flown since so I can't test my reaction, I found it very interesting and it did help to put my concerns into perspective, which should stand me in good stead next time.

Hi Keith

How kind of you to take such a personal interest in individual cases of flying phobia!

Actually, I have done two flights in June and whilst I still don't like it, I am considerably less fearful having read your book and also listened to a tape called Overcome Your Fear of Flying. The combination of these two elements seems to have transformed my situation from one of panic to one of nervousness.

Previously, I would take valium and large amounts of alcohol just to get onto a plane. I'm proud to say that I flew without anything other than the reassurance I have gained from your website and book - and of course, the tape.

I am due to fly again in July, so am hoping that each time will become easier and that I can move forward from nervousness to calm in due course.

AMAZON REVIEW "To read about the intricacies of a 300 ton jumbo landing in thick fog at a speed of 200 miles an hour whilst on three automatic pilots was amazingly relaxing. And to know that two highly skilled pilots sat there monitoring everything with their heartbeats no higher than normal was a revelation.   Hi Keith XXX was great! I almost enjoyed the flight, as I was so much more relaxed than before. I pre booked our seats, just before the wing, and did internet check-in, so the usual stress of hanging around was reduced to 10 minutes. The flight was smooth, and I kept myself calm by telling my husband everything I could remember from the seminar. He was very patient! Even my children behaved beautifully, having their own tv screen occupied them all the way. All in all, it's like some magic has descended on me, and now feel able to accept that it is ok to fly, and it's not the enormous risk I always thought it was. Getting control of yourself feels quite liberating, and I feel ready to tackle anthing! Thanks for all your help. I'll be in touch again. Regards T Back
AMAZON REVIEW Fear? What fear?, July 21, 2005 Reviewer: A reader from Oxford - United Kingdon I have been a nervous flyer for as long as I can remember - always fearing that the engines of the plane would fail mid-flight or that turbulence would cause the plane to crash. Normally I would endure these fears for the duration of a flight which up until my recent trip to Florida was only 4 hours at the absolute maximum however I felt that for an 8 hour flight I would need to do something before hand to settle my nerves. By page 5 of Keith Godfrey's 'Flying Without Fear' I was already feeling much better about enduring an 8 hour flight and by the end of the book I could even say that I was actually not that worried at all about getting onto an aircraft. Keith Godfrey covered every fear I had about getting into an aircraft and explains the workings of a plane in simple and easy to understand terms with a little humor with some amusing drawings thrown in. I was so relived that someone who knew all about planes and had worked with them for years had written a book in a non patronizing yet sympathetic way. I now finally know that turbulence does not affect an aircraft at all and that all of the sinking feelings you experience on a plane are normal and not at all a sign that the plane is about to plummet to the earth! I really don't think that I would have survived an 8 hour flight without this book as it is easy to refer to while on the plane if you need a little re-assurance. I feel that due to this marvelous book I can now go to places I would have never dreamed of going to before due to the amount of time I would have to spend on a plane. I never thought that I could like flying but now that all my fears are at rest I can honestly say that my 8 hours on the flight to Florida was an altogether enjoyable experience. Buy this book if your fear of flying is stopping you going on the holiday of your dreams I can't recommend it enough. Was this review helpful to you? Back
AMAZON REVIEW Reviewer: jonnyven from Swansea, West Glamorgan United Kingdom I felt I was the most nervous flyer of all time. Fear used to build in me two weeks before my flight and I would sit in the seat with sweat trickling down my back, eyes fixed and white knuckles from holding on to the seat! I bought the book and read it - totally amazing!! It provides common sense about flying, expelling the myths that have been built up about aviation and above all gives you confidence about the saftey of flight. For fathers day this year I had an hours flying lesson in which I took the controls of a small aircraft - incredible! This book has changed me from a nervous wreck who was close to tears on every flight to a man who is training to become a pilot. Buy the book, it will really change your views on flying. Back
AMAZON REVIEW Fly me to the moon, June 7, 2005 Reviewer: Lee Benson from West Yorkshire United Kingdom Having not flown for 15 years, I didn't really know what to expect when I got onboard the plane for my first holiday with my new girlfriend. That first flight was fine, then the more I flew the more nervous I got, which was having an adverse affect upon my girlfriend who up until then didn't fear flying at all! 4 years later I decided to do something about it before I gave up flying for good (which wasn't an option as I was getting married abroad a year later). I enroled on a 'Fear of Flying' course at my local airport. The message throughout the day was 'make sure you fly as soon as you can after this course' to feel the full benefit and put the advice into practice. I didn't and the result was I was as nervous as ever. Taking drastic action, my girlfriend (now wife) booked me a flying lession in a 2 seater plane and I loved every minute of it! I decided to build upon my confidence and buy this book - I'm glad I did. It is packed with useful answers to the questions that spring to mind when you are 35,000ft in the air and not thinking rationally. I managed to read it within a couple of hours and plan to read it again and again until my next flight. It will also make an ideal companion on the plane when I go abroad again. I wish I'd have read this book prior to enrolling on a course - it may well have saved me money! Take the first step to being comfortable with flying and buy this book. Back
AMAZON REVIEW Wonderful, helped me a lot, March 22, 2005 Reviewer: alexkerr from London, UK After reading this book, I've just completed 11 flights in the last 6 weeks, after 2 years of not being able to fly at all. The ONLY thing I did was read and re-read "Flying Without Fear", and it worked. When I first flew, I never had a problem and loved it. Gradually after many flights I became more and more uncontrollably anxious during flights despite not having any genuinely bad experiences on board - instead I convinced myself that the normal behaviour of the aircraft - banking, turbulence, noises, levelling out etc was cause for me to get very stressed and let my imagination run riot. One day I could take no more, and re-arranged travel plans for 2 years to avoid getting on an aircraft. With encouragement from my girlfriend, I found this book and bought it as preparation for a full fear of flying course. I never needed it, the book did the trick. You may find this book doesn't completely cure you, but I guarantee you will find it helps a lot, and is worth many times more than the cost of the book. I found that reading it at least 3 times before flying again really helped enormously, as I was able to instantly recall the real facts about all the things that had worried me before, rather than guessing and worrying about what it might be - things like the sensations, the noises and the behaviour of the aircraft could all be explained logically to myself from what I had read in the book. Also it is really important to take the book on the plane and have it on your lap before you take off, so you can instantly refer to it, and re-read relevant sections as you are experiencing the flight. This helps so much. If you are embarrassed about it, as I was, simply have it face down and open it from the back cover instead, or hold it inside another book or magazine. Either way do take it with you. I found it really is a case of re-training your brain and reassuring yourself with the facts you know from reading the book, rather than guessing or imagining what things might be. It can transform your trips abroad, when you don't get off the flight out feeling weak with stress and anxiety (as I did previously) or spend the whole time dreading the trip home. Finally, the book is a REALLY easy and enjoyable read. I get bored easily and thought it would be quite tiresome to get through, but actually really enjoyed reading it, and kept wanting to read more, especially when the more I read the more relief and understanding I felt.   AMAZON REVIEW 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful: Thank you so much., December 12, 2004 Reviewer: gemma2635 from Redhill, Surrey United Kingdom For anyone who is nervous of flying and belive me I was, this book will relax even the most nervous of flyers. I found the book easy to understand and informative. The book explains everything that you would need to know. Some of the facts are really interesting and it helped me to know of all the safety features in place, there is back up systems for everything, comforting eh! I have just returned from my honeymoon and can honestly say that I had a really pleasant flight I even took the book with me. Not bad considering that I held up a flight for one hour because I got off a few years back. I cant thank Captain Kieth enough. Back
2nd September 2005 Dear Keith, After a disastrous flight to New York in 1974 (14 hours total on a 707! ) I could only manage flying for another 10 years and then in 84 my fear became to great and I could no longer fly. I bought your book on 2/08/05 as I had not flown for 21 years and it was a major handicap, unfortunately your book arrived just before there were a spate of aircraft fatalities and so my confidence was knocked further, anyway suffice to say that I kept reading you book and in the last 7 days have flown to Budapest and onward to Kiev and return-4 flights! What helped more than anything is something you may not realise, it was your message on a 'With Compliments' slip, it made the book more personal and it felt as though you were talking to me rather than me reading - a bit like a 'Guardian Angel'!,I am so grateful that you 'bothered' to write this book - many thanks Martin Back
